Wonder Kids Blog

Wayne Wonder Based in Gloucestershire in the U.K is one of the country's leading children's entertainers and winner of multiple awards across his field.

As a magician and children's entertainer I am constantly on the look out for new ideas, different takes on old ideas and practically anything I can add into my repertoire.  As a by product of this I come across or invent lots of ideas that for one reason or another I can't fit into my shows.  That doesn't mean that they are no good in fact many of them work great for ideas to try at home.  I only realised this after having my daughter and seeing how much she enjoyed them.  That's why I have created this resource, for families to visit take away what they want and try these things at home.  You have everything at your fingertips for great, easy and inexpensive ideas for your little ones at home.  Going out to new experiences and spending time together as a family is important if not crucial to a child's development but that doesn't mean you have to go out and spend lots of money every time, you can create amazing memories just by investing a little bit of time at home with these great ideas.

Zootopia - Action Games

Zootopia Action Games from Wonder Kids

This week I have some awesome Zootopia games you can do at home or in a hall.  All of these are super simple and great fun.  I have already covered a great Ring Toss game/craft and I have some great FREE printables for you too, you can use the buttons below to find these posts.  Lets go.

Girraffe Stilts from Wonder Kids

Giraffe Race

This just looks like so much fun and your kids will love it. here's what you'll need:- remember to get enough supplies to make at least two sets of these so that two people can race.

  • 2 coffee cans (or any 2 cans sturdy enough for your child to stand on)
  • Yellow construction paper (enough to cover the two cans)
  • Crayons
  • 2 pieces of rope (cut to a length that can go through the can and be long enough for your child to hold as he/she walks)
  • Scissors
  • Sharp utensil (to punch holes in the sides of the cans)
  • Tape

How to Make

Color Paper

Ask your child to color “giraffe” spots on the yellow paper.

Wrap Paper Around Can

Wrap the paper around the can and tape to hold in place.

Punch Holes in Can

Punch a hole close to the bottom of the can. Then punch another hole opposite it on the other side of the can.

Thread Rope Through Can
Turn the can upside down. Thread the rope into one hole and out the other. Loop it over the top of the can and back through the first hole, and back out the other side. Tie the two end of the rope together. (You should have a strap across the top of can that your child can slip his foot through as well as a handle that your child can hold.

Walk on Legs

  • Repeat steps 1–4 for the second can.
  • Slip your child's feet through the straps, and give him the handles. Stay close while your child gets used to balancing on the giraffe legs. Walking is easier on a solid surface. Carpet and grass may be more challenging to walk on.

Pus the Peanut Game Wonder Kids

Push The Peanut

This is so simple, you wouldn't believe how many uses I have found for Swimming Pool Noodles over the years! I use them every week in my Magic Shows and I have even made lightsabres out of them too.  Now we have the elephant Push the Peanut Game!.

First cut the pool noodle to a good length, you want the kids to be able to stand up and use the noodle to push the peanut so think of a miniature hoover.  I also use a hand saw to cut the noodles.  You'll need some masking tape/painters tape.  With the tape make a course with some bends in it, at the end of the course have a small basket or washing bin for the kids to get the peanut inside of. I love this idea so much that I am putting a version of it in my Game Show.

Hungry Hungry Hippos/Humans

Hungry Humans from Wonder kids

I've saved the best idea for last! Now this one does take a little more prep and its best does in a hall but it's worth it in my opinion.  It's a great team game, so for this example I am going to say we have two teams of three.

What you'll need

  • 1 Skateboard per team
  • 1 Small-Medium laundry basket
  • Rope - to attach to skateboard. (Use the same length and type for each team, it depends on the size of the venue but you'll need maybe 40' of rope)
  • Play balls, you can find these in large bags at most toy shops, I have included some below you can buy to save you some time. Get at least 200!
  • Tape for marking off "Team Box" on the floor in the room

Set Up

Before everyone arrives you'll need to tape a square box on the floor.  One box for each team, this box is where the teams stand and it's where they bring the plastic balls back to keep. Tie the length of the rope to each skate board.  Place the laundry basket and skateboard in each home square and place the loose balls in the centre of the room, they could start rolling away but don't worry, enough will stay in the middle to play the game.

Playing

Each team chooses the first person to lay on the board, I always like to start game with music, so when there music starts each team dives into the centre and uses the laundry basket to capture as many balls as they can.  The other team members then pull them back and they need to keep the balls in their home square!  The next team member lays on the board and repeats the process.  This continues until the music stops or all the balls have been collected.  This game is mayhem but it's so much fun, trust me give it a go.

Wonder Kids Hungry Hippos Game
