Wonder Kids Blog

Wayne Wonder Based in Gloucestershire in the U.K is one of the country's leading children's entertainers and winner of multiple awards across his field.

As a magician and children's entertainer I am constantly on the look out for new ideas, different takes on old ideas and practically anything I can add into my repertoire.  As a by product of this I come across or invent lots of ideas that for one reason or another I can't fit into my shows.  That doesn't mean that they are no good in fact many of them work great for ideas to try at home.  I only realised this after having my daughter and seeing how much she enjoyed them.  That's why I have created this resource, for families to visit take away what they want and try these things at home.  You have everything at your fingertips for great, easy and inexpensive ideas for your little ones at home.  Going out to new experiences and spending time together as a family is important if not crucial to a child's development but that doesn't mean you have to go out and spend lots of money every time, you can create amazing memories just by investing a little bit of time at home with these great ideas.

Knights & Knaves - Catapult (Bonus)

Knights from Wonder Kids Catapult

I have a couple of bonus ideas for our Knights and Knaves theme.  Have you tried using the search bar at the top of the page to find hundreds of cool ideas to keep the kids amused and creative. This week it's all about this super cool and simple Catapult. Try the buttons below for all of our fun from the whole of September!

Catapult from Wonder Kids

Catapult

Pile 6 craft sticks on top of each other & secure at each end with an elastic band. Put the last 2 sticks together & tie an elastic band round one end. Place the pile of sticks between the other 2 sticks, about 2 inches in from the tied end & use 2 bands to secure in the middle. Use the last band to tie the spoon (I’ve used a measuring spoon as it has a nice deep bowl) to the other end of the top stick. Place a ball on the spoon (polystyrene ones work well for this game).

Another great idea takes us back a few years with one of my first ever You Tube videos, teaching how to make a balloon sword. They are really easy and the kids will love them.

Wonder Kids Tug of War

I think one more game will be just the job here.  How about an epic Tug of War! I love the idea below, standing on milk crates and pulling, the first one to fall off loses.  Very simple, everyone will want a go.  Make sure you look back at all of our Knights & Knaves fun but before you go how about trying out something different form the selection below?

Roald Dahl - Marvellous Medicine

Georges Marvellous Medicine is another of my favourite stories.  This past Saturday I had the pleasure of entertaining at the official Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden.  I have included some pictures from the day.  It was a blast and it's a great day out for kids. This week in the kids blog we have some great potion ideas to try, and a worksheet to get the kids imaginations going, as well as some party supplies for free! take a look below. Make sure you check out the previous two weeks exploring Roald Dahl too.

Create your own Potion

This is a great worksheet I got from my wife (she's a teacher) but it's a great way to get kids creative juices flowing and whilst they are having fun they are also practising handwriting and sentences.

Get messy

Using empty bottles in the recycling, I made coloured water and played out all the other ingredients milk, vinegar, and baking soda, along with washing up liquid, lemon juice, almond essence, face cream and toothpaste, aiming for a range of different colours, scents and textures. Talk about a sensory experience. Now I'm thinking everyone knows what happens when you add vinegar to baking soda? so i wanted to let the kids discover for themselves that some of the ingredients are going to react with each other. I set out measuring scoops and a big mixing bowl, then we started concocting. By the end of our playtime, we had a gross vibrant pink, curdled, bubbly, frothy mixture. The kiddos totally had a blast, and chattered away about “making horrible medicine for grandma” as they played.

Fun Party Idea

For birthday parties you can try this, have a sweet table using these free labels to make them look like ingredients from the book

Party Ingredients

Empty sweet jars
Our free printable George’s Marvellous Medicine labels
Candy floss
Sherbet
Colourful boiled sweets
Marshmallows
Large mixing bowl
Wooden spoon

Kids Punch - Georges Potion

Recreate your very own George’s Marvellous Medicine with our delicious non-alcoholic punch recipe. You’ll have loads of fun making it as the kids take it in turns pretending to be George, mixing his Marvellous Medicine with a large wooden spoon.

When it’s time to taste the punch, use your imaginations to act out its magical effects! We can’t promise it’ll be able to shrink any grandmas, but we can promise it’ll be very tasty!

1. Pour one litre of fresh orange juice into a large mixing bowl

2. Add two litres of lemonade

3. Scoop in half a litre of fruit sorbet (raspberry, orange or lime are the best!)

Sleepover's - Fun Games

It's a new month and that means I get to pick a new theme, now before we get started, if you have any themes or ideas you would like me to try then just comment below.  This month Im going to have a look into sleepover's.  The summer is here? I think.  The kids will be breaking up from school so there may be some good opportunities for your kids to have a sleepover with a few friends.  Maybe it's your first sleepover and your a little nervous about it.  I will have dozens of ideas to make it the best sleepover ever!

This week I am going to start with a few super simple games, it's a bit ridiculous just how easy these ideas are and I think they should keep the kids busy for quite some time.

My next Theatre Show is coming up in just a few weeks now, click the button to the right for more details on this and how to get your tickets.  It's going to be a great show full or magic and all the crazy bonkers stunts you expect from Wayne Wonder.

Balloon Ping Pong

You only need three things for this

  • Paper Plate
  • Large Lollipop Sticks
  • Pack of Balloons

I would use a hot glue gun to stick the lollipop sticks to the plates but you could also staple them or maybe use duct tape.  That's it your all set to play balloon ping pong which you can play just for fun or keep score.  Here are some additional ideas

  • Ping pong tournament, winner stays on
  • pairs/doubles make teams and play each other
  • multiple balloons start with two balloons and keep adding more
  • balloons can't touch the floor, everybody working together to make sure the balloons can not touch the floor.  Make sure you use loads of balloons for this.
  • Try different size/shape balloons, they will all bounce differently off of the paddles

Laser maze

This is something the kids can do themselves, you'll need:

  • Crete Paper cut into strips long enough to stretch across your hallway (you can always tape pieces together if the paper is not long enough)
  • cheap masking tape from the pound shop

Hand the strips to the kids and let them design their own laser maze to try and get through.  They should be able to rip the masking paper into small bits to stick to the walls.

Epic Car Run

Use some more of that cheap masking tape to design a track all over the kids room or the front room of your house.  You can even add extra toys to create different stations along the track? Build a lego petrol station or a superhero hide out.  Then the kids can drive their cars to the different stations.  Hours of fun.
