Wonder Kids Blog

Wayne Wonder Based in Gloucestershire in the U.K is one of the country's leading children's entertainers and winner of multiple awards across his field.

As a magician and children's entertainer I am constantly on the look out for new ideas, different takes on old ideas and practically anything I can add into my repertoire.  As a by product of this I come across or invent lots of ideas that for one reason or another I can't fit into my shows.  That doesn't mean that they are no good in fact many of them work great for ideas to try at home.  I only realised this after having my daughter and seeing how much she enjoyed them.  That's why I have created this resource, for families to visit take away what they want and try these things at home.  You have everything at your fingertips for great, easy and inexpensive ideas for your little ones at home.  Going out to new experiences and spending time together as a family is important if not crucial to a child's development but that doesn't mean you have to go out and spend lots of money every time, you can create amazing memories just by investing a little bit of time at home with these great ideas.

Ghostbusters - Decoration Inspiration

This week I thought I would show you some quick simple ideas for a Ghostbuster party.  If you combines these with the slime and the crafts that I have shown previously then you are well on your way to making a brilliant Ghostbuster party.

First off I wanted to show you the above, on Etsy you can buy a download to print at home a whole bunch of Ghostbuster party decorations, before you do that though check out the two top tips below which when combined with my ideas from last week, some Ghostbuster toys, green and black balloons as well as green and black party plates etc, then you're pretty much set already.

Top Tip 1

Hazard Tape, this can be find in loads of places but maybe try somewhere like B&Q.  It's not expensive and can be used to cordon off areas or displays.  You can use it to create a path to a certain area or you can even cut the tape in half, creating thin strips and use it on decorations or party favours like the picture below.

Top Tip 2

For a birthday party I recommend using rolls of plastic table cloth, they can be found on Amazon and come in every colour.  You'll need black and green, maybe a little red.  With the green cloth, cut out a slime shape or many of them and use them on the walls, over doors or on the table.

Ghostbusters - Crafts

Week two with the awesome Ghostbusters theme, this week I have some super simple and awesome crafts you can try at home.  Remember these crafts are not just for Ghostbusters, you can also use them for Halloween too! I have included a button to my Halloween blog post I did last year for loads more ideas.  You can also find the first week of Ghostbusters fun below where I showed you how to make your own slime.

It's not long until my brand new show Halloween Havoc, Myself and fellow entertainer John Johnny are teaming up to create a brand new Halloween experience.  This party is going to be all sorts of awesome with a brand new Spooky magic Show from me, Halloween Games, prizes, fancy dress, eerie disco, petrifying photo booth and loads more.  For this week only I am running a competition on Facebook for a free family of four ticket. There are not many tickets left now so make sure you take advantage of this. Click on the picture opposite for more details on Halloween Havoc.

Lollipop Ghosts

These are super cute and easy to make.  I think they make a nice little gift for Halloween or as part of a snack dox for a Ghostbusters movie marathon.  Maybe you want to catch up on the classic films before watching the new one.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Tissues
  • Lollypops
  • Black Sharpie
  • small elastic bands, or maybe use loom bands if you have some laying around
  • Thin orange and black ribbon

Here we go, Use one full size tissue, and another tissue that has been cut into quarters. Take the quarter piece of tissue and put it in the center of the full sized tissue. This will help to hide the colour of the lolly pop underneath the tissue. I tried it first with just one layer of Kleenex, but you could definitely see the lolly pop through it. Two layers worked much better to hide the colour.

Bunch up the tissue over the lolly pop and stretch the elastic over it to hold it all in place. The elastics that I used were small enough that I only had to go around once. Make eyes with the sharpie and tie the ribbon around a bow.

Paper Plate Ghost

This is a cool craft and it works brilliantly with the silly string guns I showed in last weeks post which you can find here. You can hang a bunch of these paper plate ghosts all around the place and have the kids try to shoot them with the silly string guns. So how do you make them?

You'll need -

  • Paper plates
  • White Crete Paper
  • Normal white paper (could use card)
  • Black Sharpie
  • Glue Stick

First you'll need to print out these templates on paper or card stock.  Cut out the two vale and colour them in using the sharpie. Make sure you don't miss out pupils for the ghosts eye's using the sharpie pen.  Now take the two arms and mouth from the template.  Glue the facial features to the front of the paper plate. Glue the arms to the back of the paper plate.

Cut crepe paper into five strips, 24 inches long each. Glue crepe paper to the back of the paper plate so that they hang down from the bottom.

One last thing before I let you go for the week, here is a free Ghostbuster's Trap.  Just click on the picture and print it out on A4paper or even better card stock if you can.  It's a very small trap when it's built but I think the kids will have a blast building them and playing with them.

Ghostbusters - Slime 'N' Spray

Hello, this week we have a new modern classic.  Being an 80's baby myself, the Ghostbusters were huge for me and although I haven't had the opportunity to see the 2016 version just yet I am hearing good things about it. With it being October is was hard to pick a theme this month, remember peeps I always welcome your feedback.  If there is a theme you would like to see what I can do with it, than just let me know on social media.  I covered Halloween last year and although obviously there is soooo much you can do with halloween that I could cover it again but I wanted to be a bit more specific, so over the next month I will be exploring all the fun we can have with a Ghostbusters theme.  This is perfect because it fits in with Halloween, it's topical with the new film released this year and well Ghostbusters are just cool.  There will be party supplies, games, crafts and tons more so make sure you come back next week.

Halloween is nearly here and The Halloween Havoc event that I am hosting with fellow entertainer John Johnny has nearly sold out.  If you haven't got your tickets yet, you can find more about it by clicking the link above, as of writing this there are still a few tickets left.  Im going to keep it simple for the first week, we have the best slime recipe and a great idea for a Ghostbusters game.

Here is a Slimer balloon I made for a kids birthday party one year, I love this design so much I think I may make it a decoration for the Halloween Havoc event.

This is a super easy slime recipe that is great just for playing with or you can fill pools of the stuff at a party and have a Slimer trail.  You can make these days in advance or your party or event, Ive found if you do this the water and cornflour separate so you just need a large spoon or ladle to combine the mixture together again.  Here's what you need -

Cornflour

Water

Natural Green Food colouring

I chose this recipe because it's super easy, super cheap and safe for kids.  There are lots of other recipes online for slime but many of them use chemicals and glues that I wouldn't be happy to let kids play with. This recipe is completely edible however it would taste gross and I don't recommend having some for dinner but if the kids get some stuck under their finger nails and then put their fingers in their mouth, it won't hurt them.  This is so easy, the ratio you need to work with is 1:1 so fill a bowl with 1 cup of cornflour and one cup of water mix and you should have slime.  Add just a drop or two of food colouring, if it's not green enough then add another drop or two. Take your time with the food colouring do not add loads in one go.  Now I have played with this recipe a bunch and there are a few things I wanted to mention.  I have found that messing with the temperature of the water will affect the ratio so if your water is warmer you may need to add more cornflour.  I have also found that if you want to make larger quantities of this slime (not just a bowl full) then you will be using a larger container like a bucket or plastic tray etc.  These containers normally have little grooves and crevices in them where the cornflour can build up and hide from the water so you may need more cornflour when using these containers because it just won't mix the same way.  Get creative, change the colours and this can be blue water or red blood or just all sorts of crazy colours but slime really should be green.

Here is another cool find for you.  These guns are available to buy on Amazon (I got mine for £7.99) Just click the picture opposite for the amazon link. These are brilliant, you can connect a can of silly string to the gun and then when you pull the trigger the silly string squirts out.  Great fun to use them as they are, yo could put or different shape balloons around and have the kids try to hit the targets. You could also go all the way and spray paint the guns black, then add something like the picture below to make a full blown Proton Pack.
