Wonder Kids Blog

Wayne Wonder Based in Gloucestershire in the U.K is one of the country's leading children's entertainers and winner of multiple awards across his field.

As a magician and children's entertainer I am constantly on the look out for new ideas, different takes on old ideas and practically anything I can add into my repertoire.  As a by product of this I come across or invent lots of ideas that for one reason or another I can't fit into my shows.  That doesn't mean that they are no good in fact many of them work great for ideas to try at home.  I only realised this after having my daughter and seeing how much she enjoyed them.  That's why I have created this resource, for families to visit take away what they want and try these things at home.  You have everything at your fingertips for great, easy and inexpensive ideas for your little ones at home.  Going out to new experiences and spending time together as a family is important if not crucial to a child's development but that doesn't mean you have to go out and spend lots of money every time, you can create amazing memories just by investing a little bit of time at home with these great ideas.

Finding Nemo/Dory - Sea Food

Finding Nemo Food ideas from Wonder Kids

Hello and welcome to a brand new week at Wonder Kids,  This week I have some amazing fun food ideas that are great as movie snacks or if you have a little fussy eater I think making the food fun can really help.  Some of these would also work as party food too. We have dozens of great recipe ideas at Wonder Kids, you can find them all in our great Kids Kitchen section.

These are delicious and healthy and super easy, here we go.

Crush's Turtle Shell Peppers

Peanut Sauce

  • 3 tbsp smooth peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tbsp warm water

Ingredients

  • Half cup of brown rice cooked to pack instructions
  • 4 green bell peppers
  • 1 block firm tofu
  • 2tblsp corn flour
  • 2tblsp sesame oil
  • 8 small raisins

Method

Shell Peppers from Wonder Kids

Whilst the rice is cooking, cut the bell peppers in half lengthwise and remove all stems and seeds.

In a small bowl stir together the ingredients for the peanut sauce (this sauce can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days just make sure you keep is covered)

Now prep the tofu.  I love tofu because it absorbs any flavour you add to it but you need to prep it correctly.  Slice the block in half length ways.  Wrap each half in a towel and place something heavy on top of it like  cast iron pan or some books.  This will squeeze the water out of the tofu.  You'll need to leave it for at least 15 minutes.  making sure you change the towels if they get too wet.  A lot of water will come out.  We do this so that the texture of the Tofu is really tasty once cooked.  If you skip this it will be like eating warm jelly. yuk.

Once the Tofu is drained cut into small cubes

Place corn flour in bowl and gently toss in the Tofu to cover all the pieces.  Heat a frying pan or wok, add sesame oil and fry the tofu pieces until lightly browned and crispy on all sides. Reduce the heat and add the cooked rice and the peanut sauce. Cover to keep warm

Steam the bell pepper halves, I prefer to use a tiered bamboo steamer for this but you could use a microwave too.

Creating the turtle - fill four bell pepper halves with the rice mixture.  Cut the other four halves into long strips, this makes 4 heads and 16 turtle legs. On each of the four stuffed peppers insert one strip to make Crush's head and four pepper strips to make crush's legs.

Add two raisins to each head to make Crush's eyes and enjoy.

Hankfurter & Seaweed Slaw

Method

For the slaw, combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix together. This slaw can keep in the fridge for up top 3 days, just make sure you cover it.

Cook hotdogs on packet instructions, once cooked, make seven slices lengthwise in each hotdog. These need to go two thirds of the way up the hotdog to make the tentacles. Now use the English mustard to add a face to each one. To serve, place a small amount of slaw on a plate a top with the Hankfurter. Enjoy.

Lets finish this with one more recipe, these have been super fun so far so how about a tropical, summer drink as the perfect accompaniment to go with them. If you love cooking and want to get the kids in the kitchen than make sure you check out the Kids Kitchen before you go anywhere.

Ocean Water Juice from Wonder Kids

Ocean Water Juice

Ingredients

1 teaspoon Coconut extract

3 drops blue food coloring

2 (12 ounce) cans Sprite

Instructions

Combine everything in a pitcher, if it's a tad too sharp then you can add a pinch of sugar but less is more.  Pour into glasses over ice.  I like the extra touch of adding a fish.  This is an American candy called Swedish fish but you can find them in the UK, so In have included a link below to save you some time.

Minions Re-Mixed - Cookie Robots

A brand new idea, adding to the Minions theme this time.  I love getting kids in the kitchen and this is the perfect opportunity to do just that.  First lets make the cookies and then we'll turn them into robots.

Ingredients

  • 150g salted butter, softened
  • 80g light brown muscovado sugar
  • 80g granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 225g plain flour
  • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 200g plain chocolate chip or chunks

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper.

  2. Put the butter and sugars into a bowl and beat until creamy. Beat in the vanilla extract and egg. Sieve the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt over the mixture and mix in with a wooden spoon. Add the chocolate chips and stir well.

  3. Using a teaspoon, place small mounds of the mixture well apart on the baking trays. Bake in the oven for 8–10 mins until light brown on the edges and still slightly soft in the centre.

  4. Leave on the tray for a couple of minutes to firm up and then transfer to a cooling rack.

To make these great cookies look like robots just use kitchen foil to make the legs and I used my wife lipstick lid to hold the central foil around. remove the lid so you can use it again. make a small hole in the centre of the cookie and slide the cylinder through the hole. Make sure you search for minions using the search bar above, I have loads more great ideas for you too.

Pokemon Go - Poke Snacks

Now one thing I think is missing from all of my Pokemon blog posts are some really easy but cool Poke Snacks, whether you are having a full Pokemon party, a Pokemon TV marathon or a gaming session, some great Pokemon Snacks will always take it up to the next level. Make sure you check out all of the other Pokemon blog posts I have written too, there are so many great ideas from decorations, free party printables and even some great games too. At the end of this post I have included a gallery of Pokemon birthday cakes, just for inspiration.

Before we get started with our first snack how about making a special lunch for your little Pokemon Fan, I found this great healthy Pokemon lunch and its easy to do.  Another little gem I found was this cool popcorn, I must find out how to make different flavoured popcorn one day.  As always thank you for coming to check out my blog, make sure you stay up to date with my public events too.

Babybel Cheese Pokeball

You'll need, babybel cheese, black card, scissors, hole punch, sticky tape, mcdonalds straw

First cut a strip of the card and punch it with the hole punch. Cut out the red wax on the cheese using the straw as a template for the round semi circle.  Wrap the strip of card around the cheese and use a small piece of tape on the back to keep it in place.

Candy Poke Balls

Here’s what you need to make Pokemon candy pokeballs:

  • Red candy melts
  • White candy melts
  • Black candy melts
  • Disposable icing bag
  • Spoons
  • White chocolate candies
  • Mini M&Ms

Melt the red candy melts according to package directions. Add a small amount to one of the circle cavities and use the back of the spoon to spread it around. Make sure to completely coat the inside. Fill all the cavities and chill in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes to set.

Repeat the process with the white candy melts.

Add a second layer of each color and chill in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes to set.

Remove the set chocolate from the silicone mold, then place the white bottoms loosely back inside. Try to hold the chocolate as little as possible because the heat from your hands will cause it to melt.

Fill the white bottoms with Mini M&Ms or other candies.

Spread some of the red candy melts onto the edges of the red candies and place on top of the white to create the pokeballs. Allow to harden.

Turn the pokeballs on their sides. Melt the black candy melts inside the icing bag and snip off the end with a pair of scissors.

Pipe a black line around the front of each pokeball and let it harden. Turn the balls and repeat on the back side.

Add a bit of black candy melts to the back of a white candy and attach to the front of each pokeball for a button.

Poke Pizza Anyone?

Ok so you can use my Pizza recipe from the St Patricks Day blog post I did a while back, instead of adding the rainbow toppings just follow the picture, half just covered with a mix of cheeses, the other half covers with pepperoni and then use black olives cut into slices for the middle section.

As promised below is a gallery of inspiration Pokemon birthday cakes, find some that you like and see if a local baker can reproduce something similar.
