Wonder Kids Blog

Wayne Wonder Based in Gloucestershire in the U.K is one of the country's leading children's entertainers and winner of multiple awards across his field.

As a magician and children's entertainer I am constantly on the look out for new ideas, different takes on old ideas and practically anything I can add into my repertoire.  As a by product of this I come across or invent lots of ideas that for one reason or another I can't fit into my shows.  That doesn't mean that they are no good in fact many of them work great for ideas to try at home.  I only realised this after having my daughter and seeing how much she enjoyed them.  That's why I have created this resource, for families to visit take away what they want and try these things at home.  You have everything at your fingertips for great, easy and inexpensive ideas for your little ones at home.  Going out to new experiences and spending time together as a family is important if not crucial to a child's development but that doesn't mean you have to go out and spend lots of money every time, you can create amazing memories just by investing a little bit of time at home with these great ideas.

Unicorns - Magical Games

Unicorn Games from Wonder Kids

Welcome to our second week of Unicorn fun, this week I am going to show you some great Unicorn games, these will work great for birthday party games or for just some fun at the weekend or during the school holidays.

Lets kick it off with this great treasure hunt, it's a free download, so just click on it and print it off.  You can laminate it and use dry wipe markers to make them re-usable.  Alternatively print them off, one for each player, put it on a clipboard and the kids need to colour the star in for each item they find.  I have included some super cool Unicorn clipboards below if you want to go full theme.

There are ten items to find, I have purposely made them as ambiguous as I could so that you can have some fun with them.

  1. Something Magical - could be a wand, fairy wand, glitter, potion etc
  2. Soft toy - could literallybe any soft toy
  3. Rainbow - Any multicoloured item, I have included some below
  4. Something Purple - Anything purple
  5. Star - Anything star shaped, or a picture of a star, a star made from kitchen foil
  6. A horn - an Ice cream cone or a bicycle horn
  7. Pink Clothing - Uh yea
  8. A Gem - Anything shines really, raid the pound shops, I have included a pack of plastic gems below
  9. Something that Rhymes with Unicorn - I love this one, I would just go silly with Poo-nicorn and the like, a fake poo or Unicorn Poo slime like I showed you last week.
  10. A flower - depending on the time of year this could be real or fake

Something I have started to do with these new blog posts is have a little search and go back through my previous blog posts to see if anything from them can be fitted into this theme, well this time I found a couple of things that may just work, firstly its part of my Knights and Knaves fun I found these great Horses you can make out of a pool noodle.  Super easy to make with a folded over pool noodle and some felt.  You can do Unicorn races, maybe around obstacles if you turn these horses into Unicorns by adding some cute eyes and use some fab foam to make a horn on top of the head. The other Idea that can be adjusted is the great game of Junk in the Trunk from part of my Sleepover ideas.  It's an hilarious game, just add some ribbon for a tail on the box and have the kids wear a cute unicorn horn hairband and you have another quick easy and fun game.

Oreo Unicorn

Separate the kids into pairs, give each team a stack of Oreo biscuits.  One member from each pair kneels on the floor with their head up facing the sky.  The other team member then has to stack as many Oreos as they can on their head.  Time them for this game and only give them a Minute or so. If the stack falls over they have to start over but the time keeps counting down.  The winning team is the one with the tallest stack.

Hula Hoop Unicorn Toss.jpg

Hula Unicorn Toss

Hula Unicorn Toss

You need some space for this games, you'll need one or more traffic cones, I have included some below to save some time.  And a selection of hula hoops.  First thing to do is prepare the cone.  Use spray paint to make it look more Unicorn horn like.  You can find loads of different types of spray paint these days, you can get spray paint that finishes with a rock looking effect which would turn this game into a Rhino horn toss? but you can get metallic paints, glitter paints or just spray a mix of complimenting colours like in the picture opposite. Now set the distance that the kids stand away and they through the big hula hoops at the cone/s and try to get as many as they can over the hoops.  Trust me this game is a tough one so maybe if you can have multiple cones and hoops you can set one closer and then others further away.  They get 2 points for the first one then, 3, 5, 10 etc.  You can keep track of the score on your smartphone.  The person with the biggest score wins.

That's it for this week, my fav games are the last two, I think the kids will love those two.  Check out the related posts below before you go and remember to come back next Tuesday for more Unicorn fun where we are going to explore how to make a Unicorn Lunch.

Unicorns - Magical Crafts

Unicorn Header.png

Welcome to a brand new month and a brand new theme.  I have been super busy working on new material for my magic shows, now we are firmly in the Summer season the shows have really picked up. I have just added my first brand new character of 2018 in my shows.  Meet Gully, he is the worlds only Surfboarding Seagull.  He is going to be a whole bunch of fun and I think people are just going to love the next character I add to the shows. This month we are going to try and have some fun with Unicorns.  If you are a new reader than you should know that I write almost everyday, at least a little but I post something new every Tuesday.  There are five weeks this month so we have five opportunities to explore Unicorn fun. Lets kick things off with some Unicorn colouring pages, I haven't done colouring pages for a while so I thought it would be a good idea to try it again.

Unicorn Dreamcatchers Wonder Kids

Unicorn Dreamcatchers

Following on from the success of our BFG Dream Catchers that I published whilst covering Roald Dahl, this one take it a step further but they are stunning and I can see many kids loving having one of these in their rooms.

Materials

  • 6″ Embroidery Hoops
  • Yarn and ribbon of various textures and colors
  • Hot glue
  • Felt (stiff white and light pink)
  • Decorative craft flowers
  • Glitter paper
  • Scissors

How to

  • Step 1. Wrap yarn around your embroidery hoop and secure with a dab of hot glue when you’re done.

  • Step 2. Tie yarn around one end the hoop and then tie around the hoop, crisscrossing yarn tightly. Tie off the yarn when you are done.

  • Step 3. Cut out felt outer white ears and inner pink ears. Use a stiffer white felt for the outer ears so they stick up. Hot glue the inner pink ears to the white ears.

  • Step 4. Cut out a paper horn shape from your glitter paper.

  • Step 5. Cut out lengths of various colored yarns and ribbons for your hangings (cut as long as you want the yarn to hang, but keep in mind they will be folded over to make a loop)

  • Step 6. Determine how you want to arrange your flower pattern.

  • Step 7. Assemble your unicorn dreamcatcher! Hot glue your glitter horn, flowers, and ears to your hoop.

Step 8. Loop your yarn hangings through the embroidery hoop

Now you're  starting to get in the Unicorn mood, lets find our what your Unicorn name is, mine is Windy Sparkle Gem.  You can print this off, frame it and use it to welcome guests at a birthday party.

Unicorn Bingo from Wonder Kids

Unicorn Bingo

Another super simple idea that the kids will want to play over and over again. Just click on the pic opposite for the free Unicorn Bingo print out.

How to play!

Bingo is a classic party game that most people know how to play. But just in case, here’s a quick recap!

  1. Start by cutting up one unicorn bingo card. Fold up each square and put them all in a bowl for the bingo caller.

  2. Give a bingo card and a pen/pencil to each player.

  3. One at a time, the bingo caller picks a card out of the bowl and describes the picture.

  4. If you’ve got that picture on your bingo card, cross it off.

  5. The first player to cross out a whole row (horizontal, diagonal or vertical) shouts BINGO! and wins a prize.

Make sure you have plenty of Unicorn themed prizes so that the kids can play more than once, I have found some great prizes and included them below to save you time.

Unicorn poo Slime from Wonder Kids

Unicorn Poo Slime

I've made slime before for my last Halloween Show, that recipe is a super safe recipe which I used to get splatted in my face.

This recipe is different! It contains two active ingredients shaving foam and Borax, once you have made it you need to play with it straight away.  You can be allergic to both of these ingredients and you should NEVER consume these ingredients so no fingers in mouths.  This may not be suitable for very small children.

 Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup white glue

  • 1/2 cup foaming shaving cream

  • 1/2 teaspoon borax powder

  • 1 cup water

  • Blue, pink and yellow neon food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl mix glue and shaving cream with a spoon.

  2. In a separate bowl or cup, mix 1/2 teaspoon of borax in 1 cup of water. Stir until the borax is dissolved. (To speed up this process, place mixture in a glass cup and microwave for 30-60 seconds.)

  3. Add about a teaspoon of the borax and water mixture into the glue/shaving cream bowl and stir.

  4. Knead with your hands and if it's too sticky, add a tiny bit more borax and water mixture.

  5. Once your fluffy slime recipe is ready. Separate into three pieces.

  6. Add a drop of blue food coloring to the first piece of slime and knead until the entire piece is blue.

  7. Repeat with the other two pieces of slime by adding one drop of pink and one drop of yellow to them.

  8. When all three pieces are colored, add them together.

  9. Gently knead the fluffy slime until you have a pretty mixture of the rainbow.

  10. The longer you knead this slime, the more the colors will become one.

Recipe Notes

If you prefer not to use Borax to activate the slime, try to substitute with saline solution or laundry detergent. If you don't use Borax, do not use water and you may need to add baking soda to thicken the slime.

Thats it for this week, make sure you come back next week for more great Unicorn fun, we are going to delving deeper into great unicorn party games.

Trolls - Troll Village

Hello it's another week and we have more Troll fun.  I know most people reading this are coming back after many visits so I hope you're enjoying all the changes that have been happening this month.  We have transformed from just a blog to a whole section on Wayne Wonder's website.

What's New?

We have a brand new and updated Welcome page, so if this is your first time to Wonder Kids please do take a look at the welcome page.  It's a great place to start and to understand where we are coming from.

A brand new Seasonal section, this section will be updated throughout the year to coincide with the change in the seasons, It's the fastest way to find the most relevant content for the time of year we are in.

A dedicated Party Tips section, As part of the Wonder Kids blog I have over the past few years added my experience from attending thousands of birthday parties.  Now there is one quick section where you can find out everything you should need to run an amazing party.

There are still one or two more updates to come this year and then next year I have some huge announcements coming. Let me know what you think of the changes and I hope they make Wonder Kids even better for you.

This week, Im bringing to you a cool little craft you can try at home and make your own little Troll village.  It's a paper craft, so be patient and for the best results try to print everything out on the thickest paper your printer will take.

Lets get started with this, here's what you need.  Take your time and you will have a fantastic play set that your kids will love.  I find that they tend to play with the background using their other toys too.

What you need

  • Scissors or Craft Knife
  • PVA Glue
  • Butter Knife
  • Ruler
  • Cutting Mat (optional)

Print off or save the instructions, then go thorough step by step, do not get ahead of yourself, only print off a sheet when you are ready to assemble it.

Trolls - Party Power

This week in the Trolls theme it's all about getting your party on! The Trolls soundtrack is great, so get to iTunes to buy that.  You can find some classic party games here, these games can easily fit any theme by just adding some music.  Below I have started with Pin the Hair on the Troll.  It's a free printable game and then I have packed in even more Free printables to really deck out your party in an awesome Troll theme.  Now this is the third week of Troll fun so make sure you check the previous weeks too.  I have a Troll craft which is great for birthday parties, maybe as the kids arrive.  I have also shown how to make delicious rainbow ice lollies which again would make a brilliant birthday party treat and you can make them days before the party and just keep them in the freezer!

Just click on the picture and print off your own Pin The Hair on the Troll game.  remember to mark each child's name on the picture of where they pinned the hair.  The closest to pinning the hair on the Trolls head wins. You could just blindfold the kids and try this or you could blindfold them and spin them around a few times to make it much harder.

Right lets crack on with a bunch of free party printables.  I have two different Party invite designs,  Condiment labels which could be used on Ketchup, Mustard and pickle or if you find the different coloured bottles of ketchup, you can just use three different colours of ketchup on something like hotdogs for a birthday party treat. We then have water bottle labels and a party banner.  Have fun and I would love to see what you're party was like so share some pics in the Wonder Kids club on Facebook.
