Wonder Kids Blog

Wayne Wonder Based in Gloucestershire in the U.K is one of the country's leading children's entertainers and winner of multiple awards across his field.

As a magician and children's entertainer I am constantly on the look out for new ideas, different takes on old ideas and practically anything I can add into my repertoire.  As a by product of this I come across or invent lots of ideas that for one reason or another I can't fit into my shows.  That doesn't mean that they are no good in fact many of them work great for ideas to try at home.  I only realised this after having my daughter and seeing how much she enjoyed them.  That's why I have created this resource, for families to visit take away what they want and try these things at home.  You have everything at your fingertips for great, easy and inexpensive ideas for your little ones at home.  Going out to new experiences and spending time together as a family is important if not crucial to a child's development but that doesn't mean you have to go out and spend lots of money every time, you can create amazing memories just by investing a little bit of time at home with these great ideas.

Finding Nemo/Dory - Sea Food

Finding Nemo Food ideas from Wonder Kids

Hello and welcome to a brand new week at Wonder Kids,  This week I have some amazing fun food ideas that are great as movie snacks or if you have a little fussy eater I think making the food fun can really help.  Some of these would also work as party food too. We have dozens of great recipe ideas at Wonder Kids, you can find them all in our great Kids Kitchen section.

These are delicious and healthy and super easy, here we go.

Crush's Turtle Shell Peppers

Peanut Sauce

  • 3 tbsp smooth peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tbsp warm water

Ingredients

  • Half cup of brown rice cooked to pack instructions
  • 4 green bell peppers
  • 1 block firm tofu
  • 2tblsp corn flour
  • 2tblsp sesame oil
  • 8 small raisins

Method

Shell Peppers from Wonder Kids

Whilst the rice is cooking, cut the bell peppers in half lengthwise and remove all stems and seeds.

In a small bowl stir together the ingredients for the peanut sauce (this sauce can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days just make sure you keep is covered)

Now prep the tofu.  I love tofu because it absorbs any flavour you add to it but you need to prep it correctly.  Slice the block in half length ways.  Wrap each half in a towel and place something heavy on top of it like  cast iron pan or some books.  This will squeeze the water out of the tofu.  You'll need to leave it for at least 15 minutes.  making sure you change the towels if they get too wet.  A lot of water will come out.  We do this so that the texture of the Tofu is really tasty once cooked.  If you skip this it will be like eating warm jelly. yuk.

Once the Tofu is drained cut into small cubes

Place corn flour in bowl and gently toss in the Tofu to cover all the pieces.  Heat a frying pan or wok, add sesame oil and fry the tofu pieces until lightly browned and crispy on all sides. Reduce the heat and add the cooked rice and the peanut sauce. Cover to keep warm

Steam the bell pepper halves, I prefer to use a tiered bamboo steamer for this but you could use a microwave too.

Creating the turtle - fill four bell pepper halves with the rice mixture.  Cut the other four halves into long strips, this makes 4 heads and 16 turtle legs. On each of the four stuffed peppers insert one strip to make Crush's head and four pepper strips to make crush's legs.

Add two raisins to each head to make Crush's eyes and enjoy.

Hankfurter & Seaweed Slaw

Seaweed Slaw

  • 2 cups shredded cabbage (I like to use a mix of red and white)
  • qtr cup of shredded carrot
  • qtr cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp sugar

Ingredients

  • 4 hot dogs
  • 1 tbsp English  mustard

Method

For the slaw, combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix together. This slaw can keep in the fridge for up top 3 days, just make sure you cover it.

Cook hotdogs on packet instructions, once cooked, make seven slices lengthwise in each hotdog. These need to go two thirds of the way up the hotdog to make the tentacles. Now use the English mustard to add a face to each one. To serve, place a small amount of slaw on a plate a top with the Hankfurter. Enjoy.

Lets finish this with one more recipe, these have been super fun so far so how about a tropical, summer drink as the perfect accompaniment to go with them. If you love cooking and want to get the kids in the kitchen than make sure you check out the Kids Kitchen before you go anywhere.

Ocean Water Juice from Wonder Kids

Ocean Water Juice

Ingredients

1 teaspoon Coconut extract

3 drops blue food coloring

2 (12 ounce) cans Sprite

Instructions

Combine everything in a pitcher, if it's a tad too sharp then you can add a pinch of sugar but less is more.  Pour into glasses over ice.  I like the extra touch of adding a fish.  This is an American candy called Swedish fish but you can find them in the UK, so In have included a link below to save you some time.

Finding Nemo/Dory - Action games

Wonder Kids Explores Finding Nemo

Week two of our Finding Nemo/Dory theme and I have two amazing games for you to try.  I know kids of all ages will love these and they are great for a rainy day in.

Find the Fish

You'll need the free template, just click on the picture opposite to print that out.  Cut the fish out and then on clean colourful sponges draw around the templates and then cut out the shape in the sponge.  Fill a container of water, this could be the bath tub, a small paddling pool or a large bucket.  I have included a link to some colourful sponges to save you some time below. Drop sponges into a tub of water. Have kids take turns using aquarium nets to fish out their favorite sponges. Aquarium nets come in a variety of sizes; have the kids try catching all of the sponges in a big net, or have them try to grab one sponge in a small net. After the party, guests can take sponges home as favours. You can also use these like my ultimate water balloons explained in the video below.

Dory Dash Game from Wonder Kids

Dory's Deep Sea Dash

I love this idea, it's quite a set up but I think the amount of fun the game is will be worth it.  Here's what you'll need -

  • Pink balloons (around 25)

  • String

  • Sticky tape

  • Pink crepe paper

How To Play

Cut the crepe paper to different lengths to create streamers.

Attach your crepe paper streamers to the end of the balloons so they look like pink jellyfish.

Tie string from one side of the room to the other and hang the balloons from it. Position them close together but at varying heights.

There are a few ways to play this, you could challenge your kids to 'swim' between the jellyfish as quickly as they can without touching any of the streamers. If they brush into one and it moves, they’re out!

You can play this as a race (fastest wins) or encourage each child to try to beat their own time.

I like this idea for kids maybe 6+, Blindfold one of them and put a teddy at the opposite end of the room.  It would be great if you had a Nemo or Dory teddy.  The other children or a parent then has to describe and tell the blindfold person how to get through the jellyfish without touching the tentacles.  Every person gets a try at both directions and being blindfolded.  This game will then go on for ages.

Let me know how you get on with this one, I love the idea of it and can't wait to try it myself.  Come back next week for more great ideas but in the meantime please do take a look at some of our older posts below and use the search bar to see what you can find in our hundreds of ideas.

Finding Nemo/Dory - Photo Booth and Hank

Finding Nemo Birthday Party from Wonder Kids

Hello and welcome to another month here at Wonder Kids, big, big thank you if you are coming back to us.  The growth of Wonder Kids is really amazing, I update this blog every week with other updates in the Wonder Kids platform coming along at different times of the month too, plus the Wonder Kids magazine is updated everyday.  This is just our first look into some fun with the Finding Nemo/Finding Dory theme make sure you come back next Tuesday for more great ideas.

I can't believe I have never covered just Finding Nemo before in fact I don't think I have much material on Sealife or fish in general so maybe I can explore something similar in the future? For now we'll see what the feedback is like from these ideas, let me know what you think in the comments below.

Loads of firsts for us here at Wonder Kids this month, we are going to start with some free Photo Booth printables for you to have some fun with at home. Maybe you could combine them with this app on iOS to make some cool pics or invites for an upcoming birthday?

Nemo/Dory Photo Booth

First you'll need to construct the props, take a look at the props by clicking on the pictures below.  I prefer to stick them onto BBQ skewers so for speed I have included a link to some below however lollipop sticks work too and you can find them in any craft shop.

What You'll Need

  • A printer

  • Paper

  • Card

  • Scissors

  • Clear tape

  • BBQ skewers/lollipop sticks

  • Camera

Construct the Props

  • Print the Finding Dory props out

  • Glue the paper to the card - this helps makes the props sturdy

  • Cut around the props following the dotted line

  • Tape the dull BBQ skewers/lollipop sticks to the middle of the props. Make sure you've allowed for enough stick for little hands to hold the props up

  • Point your camera and have your kids strike their best underwater pose!

  • Note: Be sure an adult removes the sharp end of the BBQ skewer before little fingers begin this craft, or that it’s supervised throughout.

Make this Hank Craft

This is super easy and kids will love to make it. Start by tracing Hank’s head on red construction paper.  I made it easy and created a template using a Finding Dory coloring sheet. Just click on the picture above for the free template. I printed my template at 181% so his head would take up most of the page, you might need to adjust the percentage based on your own printer. You can free hand draw his head if you’re talented. I’m not but luckily with the template, it’s easy for anyone to make this craft.

What you'll need

  • Red Construction Paper

  • Blue Construction Paper

  • White Construction Paper

  • Red Streamers

  • Hank Template

  • Black Marker

  • Glue Stick

  • Scissors

Hank from Finding Dory Craft Wonder Kids

I printed a couple of the Hank templates and used them to also make his eyes. It helped make me keep the shape and size more accurate.

Hank Craft Eyes Wonder Kids

I used the template to sort of estimate the location of where to glue on Hank’s eyes. Then I used the  streamer paper to create Hank’s arms. Once I determined a good length (15″-18″), I cut 4 identical pieces and folded them neatly together several times. Cut the streamers in half lengthwise. This will help keep Hank’s 8 arms similar in size.

Hank from finding Dory Wonder Kids

I attached 4 arms to the front side of Hank and 4 arms to his back. I found gluing the streamers going up helped Hank’s arms fluff out (like a 3-D effect) vs lying flat. The final step is drawing an angled straight line for his mouth. Again I used the template as a guide to draw his mouth.

That's it for this week, see you next week for more great ideas.

Pokemon Go - Gotta Catch them all

This is the blog post I have been really looking forward to. Pokemon games, I have sooo many ideas to share with you that I am having to stretch them over two blog posts so make sure you come back next week. Im still running around like a crazy man rehearsing and adding loads of touches to my theatre show Wayne Wonder's Epic Adventure.  It's coming up in a few weeks and you can find out more under the Public Events tab at the top of the page. I like the idea of setting up the games as challenges for the kids to win "badges", these feature in Pokemon and a trainer with more badges has more experience and will be harder to beat.  You can find out more about Pokemon badges here.

Poke Balls

These are time consuming to set up but the kids will love them and you can even add a couple of them into the party bags at the end of the party. Im going to give you two games to use these Poke Balls in and an extra game below too! So for the time it takes to make these balls you can have three games and something to add to the party bags.

How to

These poke balls are just ping pong balls, try to make at least 100, the more the merrier right? You'll also need some masking tape and a black sharpie pen and red spray paint.  For the masking tape I used the wider rolls, it's about double the width of standard tape.  You'll need to tape the bottom half of the ping pong balls and I found that by using the wider masking tape I used less tape because one small strip can easily cover half of the ping pong ball.  The paint the top half red, allow this to dry then remove the tape and draw a black line around the middle.

Game 1

Earn your psychic badge, add all the poke balls in a see through jar, the kids need to guess how many poke balls are in the jar.  This is great idea to do with the kids as they arrive, just have a pad with lined paper next to the jar, the kids write their name and their guess with how many balls they think are in the jar.  The person with the closest guess wins their psychic badge.

Game 2

Shh it's a treasure hunt but don't call it that.  This is find the Poke Balls, I love that you can do this wherever you are, in your garden at home or in a local hall this is a great all seasons game.  Hide all the poke balls around and give the kids a bag each, let them loose to see who can find the most Pokeballs.

Game 3

This is a bonus idea and it's just a link from a previous blog I did all about running sleepover's.  As soon as I thought of using ping pong balls I knew this bonus ides would work brilliantly.

Bonus Idea - Junk in the Trunk

Squirtle Water Bomb Challenge

This simple idea uses the colouring in Pokeball that I included in part one of my Pokemon posts, click here.  You'll need three of them so the birthday child can colour them in the team colours, blue, red and yellow.  Do this a few days before the party.  You can then either buy a pack of water bombs and fill them up the day before the party or you can use my ultimate re-ueable water bombs here.  I know which one I would choose.  Tape the coloured poke balls on the floor in a vertical row.  the idea is that each child gets a chance to hit each pokeball obviously this gets harder the further away the poke balls are.  Let each child win a prize for this game because it's really hard for them.

Hatching Eggs

I love this idea, its a little out there with the theme but I think the kids will enjoy it.  It's an egg and spoon race but it uses these dinosaur eggs.  The eggs are made of plaster of paris with a creature hidden inside.  Ok its a dinosaur but it's close enough to be a pocket monster.  You need to create a course for the kids to run, this can be a straight forward race or you can add obstacles like cones to go around or maybe even a tunnel to crawl through.  They need to complete the course without dropping their eggs. At the end of the course they need to smash the eggs up to find the "monster" inside. A prize for every person that finds their pocket monster. Click the picture opposite to get the best dinosaur eggs I've found.

Pokemon Go - Poke Part Deux

This week I'm going to delve into some really cool Pokemon Party Decorations, then we have two more weeks of pure Pokemon games and crafts for the kids.  When you put all of these blog posts together you'll be ready to make the most awesome Pokemon Party ever! First I have included the link to last weeks blog all about making sure the kids have some cool things to get on with upon arrival, click the button below to take a look at where we started.

I found this picture on my computer recently, it's Selina my Seal puppet, she was trained as a puppy in the circus, she's very cute, very cheeky and has some amazing talents to show off in my upcoming theatre show - Wayne Wonder's Epic Adventure, click here for more info and how to get tickets to come along.

It's taking place in High Wycombe on Saturday 3rd September 2016, at the time of writing this there are still tickets available.  There is something for every member of the family at this show, please come along.

And were off, with free Party Invitations, these look great and you can just print them off from home.  I would prefer to print them on photo quality paper but whatever you have to hand will work fine.

Now we need some decorations for the party area, lets start with these Poke Balls, they spell out Happy Birthday.

Accessorise with these free printables, great drinks bottles labels that you can stick on to most kids sized bottles and fold your own Pokemon popcorn box, the kids will love these.

Ok so we are now well on our way to having a great looking Pokemon party, I have included some more ideas below that are all pretty self explanatory but I think will work great.

I love the backdrop here, just use some coloured plates either plastic or paper, glued onto a board.  Remember there are three colours you can choose from to match the teams that feature in Pokemon.  Team Valour (Red), Team Mystic (Blue), Team Instinct (Yellow). This would also be great to take pictures in front of too.

Super simple idea with balloons, just draw a very simple Pikachu face and boom instant Pokemon deco.  From experience I can tell you that sharpies make great pens to draw onto balloons.  make sure you avoid any pens with metal tips.

I love these party tables.  They actually look quite easy to achieve, use the rolls of table cloth that you can get in all sorts of colours from places like Amazon.  You can even overlap one colour over the other and use the black duct tape to cover up the overlap.  The centre of the PokeBall tables look like a paper plate taped on using the duct tape.  Quite simple but when you combine this with all the other decorations in this blog then party will just look awesome.
